MEMBER for Mallee Andrew Broad says the defeat of a burqa ban motion led by North Queensland MP George Christensen was “probably a good thing”.
Mr Broad also said there wasn’t strong support for a burqa ban in the Mallee following a vote of delegates at The Nationals’ federal conference in Canberra on Sunday.
Mr Christensen has argued a ban on burqas, niqabs and other facial coverings was needed in government buildings and public spaces for security reasons – but also said his party was “bleeding to the right” on the issue.
The motion was defeated 55-51 in a vote of the delegates, which Mr Broad said he wasn’t present for.
