No move on police airport presence

POLICE could be given new powers in a bid to keep Australia’s airports safer.

The plan, reported by News Corp Australia on Monday, could stop suspicious passengers flying and allow police to order members of the public to leave major airports.

But while local police will continue to patrol Mildura Airport as part of normal operations, they said there was not yet a need to increase their presence.

Mildura police Acting Inspector Paul Matheson said heightened terrorist precautions in the past couple of years had led to an increase in patrols around all high-risk venues and areas.
