THE cost of delivering vital services it cannot afford is at the forefront of Mildura Council’s submission to a public inquiry into rural and regional councils.

The council says it is hampered by the expectation of its status as a regional city while having the revenue of a large shire, and the sum total of services asked for by residents amounted “to far more than council can afford to undertake in any given year”.

Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne yesterday said the council would look for a more balanced system of funding council’s need to service towns 250km from Mildura.
