Abolish ‘slavery’, says MP

THE exploitation of backpackers in north west Victoria by dodgy labour-hire contractors has been raised during a Federal Parliamentary inquiry in Canberra into modern slavery.

Federal Member for Dunkley Chris Crewther raised the issue after reading in Sunraysia Daily  the plight of backpackers having to work up to 16 hours a day in an orange packing shed in north west Victoria.

A parliamentary sub-committee is investigating measures to improve Australia’s framework for combating modern slavery.
