THE company which has a land permit to re-open the abattoir at Mildura South is hoping to be operating by early next year.
Mildura planning consultant James Golsworthy who represents Meat Co said the company was happy to hear the hospitality industry and livestock industry were keen to make use of a local abattoir.
Mildura has been without an abattoir since 2004, when the Mildura South facility closed.
Local celebrity cook Stefano De Pieri told a conference held by Mallee Sustainable Farming this week that not having a local abattoir prevented restaurants in the area from serving Mallee produced meat.
