Move to block water powers

THE NSW Opposition has moved to block a change in powers that would give NSW Water Minister Niall Blair the ability to pardon irrigators who may have illegally harvested floodwaters.

It follows ABC’s Four Corners episode that alleged Murray-Darling Basin irrigators had been stealing water by using environmental flows for irrigation and tampering with water meters.

NSW Deputy Labor leader in the NSW Legislative Council Walt Secord moved to disallow the regulation gazetted by Mr Blair on June 30 and is scheduled to be debated this morning in the Upper House.
