CELEBRITY cook Stefano De Pieri has given Mildura some food for thought, claiming the region needs its own abattoir to ensure restaurants like his can serve locally produced meat.
Mr De Pieri said the regional city hasn’t had a local abattoir for several years and he has to source his meat from Loxton in South Australia’s Riverland and in Swan Hill.
“We badly need an abattoir,” he said at the Our Future in a Global Food System conference yesterday. “Then people can use it and we can start creating some more industries, like someone raising some ducks and chickens and free range products and real food.”
