TWO people have died after two cars collided head-on while travelling on the Sturt Highway near Euston about 6.45am Sunday.

A utility and a sedan were travelling near the intersection of Tarpaulin Road, 35km west of Euston when the collision occurred.

The female utility driver and sole occupant died at the scene and a male rear seat passenger of the sedan also died.

The sedan driver and a second male sedan passenger both sustained critical injuries.

The collision closed the Sturt Highway in both directions for at least 11 hours with Wentworth Shire Council workers redirecting traffic.

Emergency services remained on the scene late Sunday afternoon.

A clean up effort was under way after a significant amount of debris from the collision covered the road.

A total of four lives were lost in three separate crashes which all occurred in country NSW Sunday morning.

This prompted the NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy to issue a rural road reminder to motorists.

“The causes of these collisions are still being investigated but these tragedies should serve as a reminder of the need for road users to anticipate unexpected hazards such as animals and slowing down if you are not used to driving on dirt or gravel roads,” he said.

“Highway patrol police have been conducting a number of operations in rural areas this year. We want to make sure that wherever you are in this state, you get home safely.”

The collision brought Sunraysia’s 2017 road toll to three.
