Mayor Glenn Milne, inset, says a lack of maintenance on the Mildura rail line is putting lives at risk, as shown by derailments like this one at Ouyen in 2015.

LIVES are being put at risk due to a lack of maintenance on the Mildura rail line, according to Mildura Mayor Glenn Milne.

His comments follow the release of a report this week into the derailment of a freight train in late 2015 which caused extensive damage to wagons, trackside infrastructure and about 200 metres of track.

That derailment followed a similar event south of Ouyen just seven weeks earlier when another Pacific National fright train took almost 1.5km to come to a standstill after the trailing bogie of the last wagon derailed.
