Gambling harm ‘widespread’

MALLEE District Aboriginal Services should lobby the region’s politicians for stricter controls on poker machines and call for an investigation into bingo operators’ profits, according to a new report into the harms caused by gambling among Sunraysia’s Aboriginal community.

The report found gambling was causing “significant harm” among the Aboriginal community, including relationship breakdowns, drug and alcohol use, and some children going without food.

Commissioned by MDAS and published by La Trobe University in conjunction with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, the report was compiled from interviews with 26 community members across Mildura, Swan Hill and Kerang regions.
