CSIRO says mouse numbers are high on some farms in the Mallee where grain from high-producing wheat and barley crops fell last year.
Farmers in north-west Victoria experienced bumper crops due to high rainfall and mild weather during spring last year.
CSIRO researcher Steve Henry has been monitoring mouse numbers across the nation including in the Mallee and said the population varied across the region.
