MILDURA Fire Brigade senior station officer Malcolm Hayes says the Victorian government’s plan to split the Country Fire Authority (CFA) will have minimal impact on Sunraysia brigades.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews announced the shake-up yesterday morning which could see the CFA become a volunteer-only firefighting service.

A new organisation, Fire Rescue Victoria, will be established to fight fires in Melbourne and major regional centres and will be staffed by paid firefighters.

Mr Hayes has described the move as “positive” and said it would have little effect operationally on career and volunteer firefighters.
