A Mildura man accused of being part of an international people smuggling syndicate claimed he was just “showing off” when played recordings of conversations alleged to be with or about fellow smugglers, a court has heard.
Abbas Allami, 38, pictured, faced the Melbourne County Court yesterday for the beginning of a trial after pleading not guilty to a charge of aggravated people smuggling.
In his opening address to the jury, prosecutor Kevin Armstrong said Allami facilitated the proposed entry into Australia by boat for a family of six from Iraq, who had no legal right to enter the country, by providing and organising transport in Indonesia.
