POWER prices will soar if Australia continues to invest in gas-fired power generation at the expense of renewables, a Climate Council report says.

The report, released this week, also said new gas-fired power plants wouldn’t do anything to help tackle climate change.

It instead recommended the introduction of a transition plan for the country’s ageing, inefficient national energy system.

It said the plan would need to ramp up renewable energy, energy efficiency and storage technology to help phase out fossil fuel power generation within 30 years.
