SOUTH Australian Water Minister Ian Hunter says building a new lock just upstream of the Murray mouth is “a silly joke that shouldn’t even be contemplated”.

Victorian Opposition water spokesman Peter Walsh has suggested the construction of a lock at Wellington, upstream of South Australia’s Lower Lakes, and the removal of five barrages that maintain a freshwater environment in the lakes.

Mr Hunter said the idea had not been discussed during Friday’s Ministerial Council in Mildura.
