Whenmechief thrills

LOCALLY owned pacer Whenmechief made the move up to Group 1 racing with flying colours after a superb effort to finish third behind the all-conquering New Zealand pacer Smolda in the $100,000 South Australian Pacing Cup at Globe Derby Park last Saturday night.

Whenmechief took full advantage of his pole draw when SA trainer-driver Darren Billinger had him in the lead in the early stages before taking a trail behind the visiting Terang pacer Jilliby Jagger.

The New Zealand star Smolda then made a forward move to sit up outside the leader and it ended up being a two-horse war in the straight, but the Mark Purdon trained and driven gelding was too classy to defeat Jilliby Jagger by a 2.3m margin in a new track record time of a 1:56.8 mile rate.
