Backpacker tax deal denied again

UNCERTAINTY in the horticulture industry continues after Labor and crossbench Senators yesterday rejected the government’s 15 per cent backpacker tax “compromise” deal in the Senate.

The issue will go back to the House of Representatives with the government appearing unlikely to accept a lower rate.

Labor secured the support of Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch, NSW Senator David Leyonhjelm and West Australian One Nation Senator Rod Culleton for its proposed 10.5 per cent tax rate for backpackers.
