Victoria’s regent parrots could be more numerous than thought, a Mallee study shows.

RECENT discoveries of vulnerable and endangered bird species in unexpectedly high numbers in the Mallee have astounded scientists, volunteers and conservation experts.

During the citizen science fauna survey in Annuello Flora and Fauna Reserve, south-east of Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, recordings included 1600 regent parrots flying overhead within a two-hour period.

Regent parrots are listed as vulnerable in Victoria with an estimated population of only 500 adult birds. More than 20 endangered mallee fowl were also observed.
