Phil Douglass thinks being asked to outline exactly how he can cut rates amounts to vilification, I believe it is a fair question.
Councillors have been working in conjunction with staff to attempt to keep rates to a minimum for at least the past eight years. The call for cost cutting and lower rates is nothing new.
A few undetailed statements will not cut rates, but not replacing staff will cut services.
Mr Douglass needs to show the community the detail, not make wide sweeping statements that he can’t back up.
As for vilification, if Mr Douglass wants to be a councillor he needs to realise he will be subject to scrutiny (vilification in his words) from day one.
Service cuts are hard to achieve and have an effect on large sectors of the community. Mr Douglass’ idea will involve cuts. He should make it very clear as to what he proposes to cut.
