Mildura Rural City Council never had a farming differential rate until current councillors introduced a 95 per cent farming differential rate in 2014/15 budget.
Before that budget, council had a general rate for everyone in the municipality and a drainage charge for townspeople.
This was not a farming differential. Kevin Smith’s claim (“Differing views on differential rate”, Sunraysia Daily, October 12) that councillors removed a farming differential rate is untrue.
I would have thought as a former manager of financial services at MRCC he was aware of that.
Rate rises were previously 6 per cent and over and predicted to stay that way well into the future. Current councillors have reduced rate rises to 2.5 per cent.
