State probes jobs link to water buybacks

VICTORIAN Water Minister Lisa Neville says the State Government is undertaking its own assessments on the socioeconomic impact of water recovery in the southern Murray-Darling Basin.

A report issued by the Murray­Darling Basin Authority last week on a four-year study into the ­impact of water recovery in the northern basin linked it to substantial job losses in some northern NSW and southern Queensland communities, prompting calls from irrigators for a similar review in the southern basin.

MDBA chair Neil Andrew last week said the authority was already evaluating the impact water recovery was having on southern basin communities, albeit to a less stringent time frame than that ­imposed for the formal northern basin review.
