MORE than 700 people have notified Australia’s airspace authority, the Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA), of their intention to fly a drone.

The increase in interest follows a relaxation of the laws on drones – or unmanned aircraft – which saw drone users able to fly a drone weighing less than 2kg without a pilot’s licence.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in the new under-2kg commercial category, with more than 700 people notifying CASA of their intention to operate in the category,” CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said.
