LEADING horticulture body ­AUSVEG has applauded Tasman­ian Senator Jacqui Lambie’s strong stand on the so-called backpacker tax.

Senator Lambie last week called on the Federal Government to ­listen to industry and state government leaders about the potentially adverse implications for Australian industry if proposed changes to the tax status of working holidaymakers was implemented.

Senator Lambie’s statement came amid an interdepartmental review of the Australian Government’s plan to remove the tax-free threshold on backpackers’ earnings and tax them at a rate of 32.5 per cent.
