Putting kids’ swim safety first

AS the weather starts to heat up in Mildura, it’s an ideal time for parents to take steps to ensure their children’s safety in the water this summer.

Mildura YMCA acting area manager Sam Winter said enrolling a child in swimming lessons could save his or her life.

She said aquatic education taught vital water safety and survival skills, including treading water, rescues and getting children as young as 15 months to fall into the water and swim back to the edge unaided.

About 50 children have enrolled the Mildura’s YMCA aquatic education program since it was launched in July.

Run by AUSTSWIM qualified teachers, the lessons are held at Karadoc Swim Centre, Irymple, on Mondays and Wednesdays, and Aquarius Apartments, Mildura, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
