Tough love: Decision made to give Irymple best chance at football premiership

IRYMPLE co-coach David Byrnes said the past week had been the hardest week of his football life.

Jordan Payne and Bodan Bishop are the unlucky players that have been dropped for the Swallows grand final team.

Swallows captain Shane Crossling, who has not played since round 14 when he injured his medial meniscus in his right knee, headlines the inclusions in final squad, alongside Ryan Dowdy.

Josh Dean comes in for Wentworth, while Riley Riordan makes way.

Byrnes said telling Payne and Bishop they had to make way was the hardest part of coaching.

“It has been pretty tough but we make selections because we want to win a premiership,” Byrnes said.

“Unfortunately, for the two people that miss out, it’s going to be terrible for them but they’ve got an opportunity to play in the reserves grand final.

“Hopefully they take it the right way and go out there and do really well in the reserves.”

Byrnes said he had been so involved with team selection this week that he hadn’t had time to get excited or nervous for the season decider.

“It has been hard this week having to deal with picking the team and dropping two people,” he said.

“That’s been the hardest part so I haven’t even thought about being excited or nervous, it’s all about preparation.”
