Pressure on: Reclaim the Base group takes public consultation into its own hands

PRO-PUBLIC hospital lobby group Reclaim the Base is stepping up pressure on the State Government to release a full report into Mildura Base Hospital’s performance.

Spokesperson Jill Joslyn said the government was continuing to keep Mildura people in the dark by releasing a condensed seven-page summary of Aspex Consulting’s 300 page report. The group is lobbying to have Mildura’s privately-run base hospital returned to public hands.

It says it will take public consultation into its own hands, starting with the formation of its own community-based expert panel (CBEP) to evaluate the departmental review of the services agreement between the government and Ramsay Health Care.

The review, released in June, gave the hospital a pass-mark in nearly all the criteria of its service agreement, but a fail in the areas of collaboration with other health services and maternity and sub-acute (non-urgent emergency) services.

“We deserve to be well-informed about our hospital, not kept in the dark,” she said.

“We demand that the government release the complete review immediately and embrace the opportunity to liaise with our CBEP and community at large. If the government refuses this very urgent request, the community is faced with the chilling question of what are they trying to hide.”
