Funding key to tackling threat

A RAPID increase in the use of ice is having major ramifications among Aboriginal communities including Sunraysia, according to the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service.

VALS has made the following submissions to an inquiry into the supply and use of methamphetamines in Victoria:

The need for funding for mental health assessments for clients as part of their bail application or sentencing hearing is likely to increase, placing further pressure on the Legal Aid budget.

Ice should be treated primarily as a health issue and placed within a new justice reinvestment approach that seeks to treat the underlying causes of offending and applies evidence-based treatment and economic rationality to dealing with those who continue to offend.

There is a pressing need for a more comprehensive range of services, including mental health assessments and support, detoxification and accommodation.
