THE historic former CSIRO horticultural research station and laboratory at Merbein South will be sold within days.
An offer has been accepted and contracts are expected to be signed today or soon after Easter. Elders’ agent Martin Williams handled the sale, but would not disclose the price.
However, when the property was first advertised for sale in January real estate sources believed it would fetch less than $1 million.
The purchaser is believed to be a Queensland businessman who intends to use the former research facility as a park for motorhomes and fifth-wheelers that are too large for conventional caravan parks.
He has plans to establish up to 16 of the park complexes throughout Victoria.
Buildings on the site would be converted to provide motel-type accommodation, restaurant and other facilities for travellers.
Marketing material produced for the sale listed features such as 10 bathrooms and bedrooms, modern administration area, shedding, visitors’ centre and accommodation.
