Celebrate Australia Day with pride

26 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
AUSTRALIA Day is more than just a public holiday – it is a time to celebrate our nation’s past achievements and embrace our nation’s present and future.

Australians have much to celebrate and to be proud of on our national day.

Our land, people, diversity and our cultures, our freedom and democracy, and our belief in a fair go, are all distinctive features that have built our nation’s character over generations.

We should reflect on the privileges and benefits we have as Australians, where people from many different backgrounds are able to live in peace and share in everything our country has to offer.

This Australia Day, I ask you to get into the spirit, think about what it is we celebrate.

Today, no matter where you are either at a barbecue or a community event, there is something you can do to show your national pride, your pride in our country, your pride in our people and your pride in our achievements.

I encourage all communities to support their local government’s events this Australia Day.

John Williams MP,

Member for Murray-Darling.
