Robl ecstatic with dramatic reversal of fortune

Robl ecstatic with dramatic reversal of fortune

05 Feb, 2012 02:00 AM

Just nine weeks into his comeback after a 12-month betting-related disqualification, jockey Peter Robl can't believe his luck. "I've ridden 30-odd winners in nine months. I've never done that before," the 40-year-old said. "It's been amazing.

"I couldn't have done it without opportunities and support from people like Clarry Conners, Anthony Cummings and a lot of country trainers. People have thrown me a bone even after the disqualification."

Although riding work at Randwick and Warwick Farm, Robl, originally from Benalla and a Southern Districts premiership rider, has never forgotten his country roots.

At Goulburn last Monday, Robl snared four winners, two for Conners and two for close mate, Goulburn trainer Danny Williams.

"There's no better thrill than going back to places like Wagga, Goulburn and Canberra and riding winners for mates who have stuck," Robl added. "I've known Danny for over 10 years. He's got some very nice horses like War Charm, a horse with a bright future and Shining Example [Goulburn winner], although still raw, can step up to the plate when he matures."

Robl admits he did it tough on the sidelines and even enrolled in a boilermaker course he hopes to complete via night school. He also continued his passion for speedway racing.

"The rug had been pulled from under me. I'd never done anything but ride for 22 years," he said. "With the racing I'd always mucked around with welding so I enrolled in a three-year boilermaker course."

And the biggest lesson he learnt from the sordid mess?

"Simple. Don't be a dickhead like me," he stated emphatically.

THIEVES HIT TUNCURRY

Fledgling Tuncurry Forster Jockey Club are reeling after thieves broke into the machinery shed last weekend and stole $9000 worth of tools and other equipment.

Club president Garry McQuillan vowed the loss would not affect the March 10 Tuncurry Forster Cup meeting. "It's just extremely disappointing for all the people, mainly volunteers," McQuillan said. "Local business houses have generously offered to help out. It's a setback but we'll have everything in order."

YOUNG BLOOD

Bargain hunters should be out in force at the annual Dubbo sales commencing on February 12.

Of the 69 yearling lots on offer, four are by first season sire Bon Hoffa, the fleet-footed group 1 winning Melbourne sprinter, Bon Hoffa (by Belong To Me), from the internationally acclaimed Danzig line.

Two colts from the first crop of Musket, a half-brother by Redoute's Choice to Makybe Diva, should create interest and several lots from renowned Hunter Valley studs Darley and Emirates will also go under the hammer.

LUNCH WITH NASH

Champion Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller will be special guest at the launch of the $725,800 two-day Albury Cup Carnival at a special luncheon on Friday, March 2.

Featured races include the $170,000 Albury Cup, $40,000 Albury Guineas, $60,000 City Handicap and the $50,000 Flat Knacker, offering a $100,000 bonus for any horse breaking 50 seconds for the 900 m.
