Insults start to fly from furious Coalition

08 Sep, 2010 01:16 PM
The insults have started to fly from Coalition frontbenchers furious at being snubbed by the independents who backed Labor into government.

Just weeks after their leader, Tony Abbott, pledged a "kinder, gentler polity" as he sought to woo the independents, his senior troops came out all guns blazing today, attacking the legitimacy of Julia Gillard's administration.

Liberal Senator George Brandis told ABC Radio the Labor government had "as much legitimacy as the Pakistani cricket team".

His colleague, Christopher Pyne, the opposition's manager of business in the House of Representatives, said the alliance between Labor, the Greens MP, Adam Bandt, and independents Andrew Wilkie, Rob Oakeshott, and Tony Windsor, was like "putting the mongoose and the cobra together".

Mr Pyne singled out Mr Windsor and Mr Oakeshott - whose support tipped Labor into office - saying their decision offended common sense.

"What went wrong yesterday is that common sense didn't prevail...it defied common sense," Mr Pyne told the ABC.

He ridiculed Ms Gillard's suggestion of letting "the sun shine in" to illuminate political proceedings, saying he wanted to continue to put the spotlight on what had been a bad government.

"This will not be a parliament where all of its history is turned on its head and we all sit around smoking a peace pipe singing Kum Bay Ya," he said.

Prominent Nationals senator Ron Boswell also took a swipe at Mr Windsor, claiming his decision could be seen as "payback" for years of enmity towards his former party.

At his press conference yesterday, Mr Abbott vowed to hold Labor "ferociously to account" in opposition.

keep your team together Abbott as we will be back at the polls in 6 months. This is the time show Australia that you and the coalition have what it takes to run a stable government, if you do that you are in the winning team.

It is nice to see that those words ring true about a politician will promise anything to get voted in

And this is why the Coalition couldn't hold a minority government - because when they don't get their way, they start acting like children. They were insulting the independents before it became obvious that the election was hung. They started insulting Gillard when she provided information the independents asked for and making claims they were being asked to do things they weren't. And now they didn't get in, they're insulting the independents again. They really know how to win friends and influence people.

The two traitors to democracy in this country deserve every criticism that comes there way

We better all learn the words to Kumbaya because that is what Oakshott thinks we will all be doing. Bring on three years

Well let's hope that tweedledum and tweedlestupid can learn to live with their decision.

Well considering labor easily led this economy through the world recession virtually unscathed while the rest of the world still lick their wounds, and the people suffe,r so should the independents back labor. The mad monk is still looking for his lost billions in the liberal financial black hole before he can resurface and truly give his fair dinkum argument in opposition. He's just another Latham dressed up in liberal cloth. Off with his head and maybe bring back the only intelligent opposition leader in a long while Malcolm Turnbull. For the moment its 3 years of the ALP. Bring it on

I like the current situation The so called two party system is not democracy. And why does one team ALP, have to compete against two teams, Libs and Nats combined team. Thats like the Wallabies having to play the All Blacks and the English at the same time 100 per cent behind Rob Oakshott

I hope you are all the wiser now in that electorate. Your elected Independent MP, who blathers like nobody I have ever heard, proudly announced a "new paradigm" in politics just last week; presumably one where MP's would engage in group hugs and chew the fat over a hot cocoa. Then, he reluctantly announces yesterday he's done a Judas Iscariot - traded your interests - not for a few pieces of silver - but a leather chair and more perks. The man has absolutely no moral compass and I hope he gets early retirement before he hits 41. A fellow of poor character. I think Gillard deserves her weekly meetings to have him blather endlessly.

When the independents, labour and greens find a way to balance between green issues with jobs and trade measures (and they will) this will spell the demise of the Libs and Nats. Now wonder they (sic) are spiteful and bitter. Turnbull got on the wrong side of them and see what happened to him. For me their current behaviour goes to show that Abbott, Hockey, Brandis and Pyne et al can't change their spots (even if they wanted to). Thankfully the independents made the right decision for their constituents and the country. My tip is that the coalitions behaviour will deteriorate to their detriment.
