The Nichols Point Cricket Club will turn pink next weekend to help fight breast cancer in their round 12 match against Mildura West at Nichols Point.
The man behind the initiative for Nichols Point, Nathan Bruinhout, said he was inspired to get behind the cause after seeing Jane McGrath Day at the Sydney Test match between Australia and India last month.
“The players looked pretty snazzy in their pink gear and I thought I want to be involved in this,” Bruinhout said.
The Sunraysia Cricket Association club will be one of hundreds of clubs across Australia joining the Pink Stumps Day initiative which helps raise money for the McGrath Foundation.
Bruinhout said the club will be hoping to raise at least $900.
“Even if it is something small, like $5 or some kids donating $1, I’m going to have a big can with volunteers going around the oval,” he said.
“Even if it’s 50 cents, something so small can be so big for someone with cancer,” Bruinhout said.
“It helps save lives and hopefully we will really find a cure soon. Anything can help.”
Nichols Point third division captain and owner of Mildura National Tiles, Scott Sutton, has made the target of $900 a lot easier to achieve after generously donating $500.
Sutton said he did not hesitate in donating money to the foundation.
“It’s a great cause, I’ve been playing at this club for 20 years now and Nathan has taken the step-up to organise this and I thought what better way to help out,” Sutton said.
“Hopefully we can get a decent crowd here, that would be fantastic,” he said.
Bruinhout was touched by cancer in 2005 when his father passed away due to bone marrow cancer, when Nathan was just 16-years-old.
“Being in hospital with someone who has cancer and the effects it can have on a person is so devestating,” Bruinhout said.
“He was a mentor, a coach and a father all in one.”
There will be a splash of pink all over Nichols Point Reserve with the players ditching their usual green caps for pink, as well as pink wicket-keeping pads and pink stumps.
The club will be having a barbecue and the Loxton Country Bakehouse will supply pink food for the day, including pink slices, cakes and doughnuts.
“For the kids we’re going to have a jelly-bean contest. They will have to guess how many jelly beans are in the jar for 50 cents a guess,” he said.
Bruinhout called on other Nichols Point businesses to support the initiative to raise money for the McGrath Foundation.
“Hopefully we can get a few more organisations to put a little bit in there as well just towards the fundraising,” he said.
“It’s pretty exciting times for Nichols Point, it’s the first time we are doing it and hopefully we’ll do a few more after this.”
