Sunraysia Soccer: Colours in historic victory

08 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
THREE Colours’ senior men’s team defeated Mildura United on the weekend to claim a hat-trick of S-League championship titles.

The Grand Game of the Week was a beauty between the reigning S-League Champions and the 2010 surprise packet, Mildura United.

The opening exchanges were even with both teams feeling the other out, trying to avoid making any mistakes.

United opened the Colours defence and should have scored but for a last-gasp clearance off the line by Michael Quin.

The first half was a stop-start affair with the referee being kept very busy as every ball was hotly contested.

In the second half, United became the more attacking of the two sides and went just wide on a couple of occasions.

The game began to open up and the ball was going from end to end when David Chick went on a run down the left wing before he cut inside the box and slid a pass across to Brandon Zaffina who knocked the ball home, one – nil to Colours.

United began to push forward in search of an equaliser as that would be enough to hand the title to United.

The large crowd in attendance held their breath as United went close on a number of occasions, but in the end Colours held on for a famous victory in the club’s 30th anniversary year.
