IRYMPLE will take on the might of Robinvale to challenge for this season’s Sunraysia Football Netball League grand final following a hard-fought 29-point victory over Wentworth on Saturday.
Inaccurate kicking cost Wentworth dearly, however Irymple used the tricky conditions to their advantage to run out 14.11 (95) to 8.18 (66) victors.
Kicking with the aid of a stiff breeze in the opening term, Wentworth had 11 shots at goal to nil, but had just 4.7 to show for its efforts before Irymple replied with 6.6 in the second.
It was the third term that set up the win for the Swallows, restricting Wentworth to 2.6 with the wind.
Irymple set sail in the last with the conditions to their advantage, adding 6.4 to 1.3 to turn a two-point deficit into a five-goal win at the final siren.
Irymple coach Donato DeAngelis (three goals) and leading forward Nick Coghlan (four goals) were key players for the Swallows, while Nathan Hamence challenged for best-on-ground honours.
For Wentworth, Carmelo Lando and Glen Cumming were their multiple goal scorers in their first defeat at the hands of Irymple this season.
The season’s penultimate contest had everything going in Irymple’s favour with a home-ground advantage, a week’s rest and a full complement to pick from.
A youthful Wentworth lost key big man Justin Clay before the September action and was on the rebound from a 108-thumping at the hands of Robinvale last weekend.
Irymple now face the season’s greatest challenge against Robinvale but are not expected to die wondering.
