Demons claim top spot

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Demons have taken top spot on the Mildura Basketball Associations A Grade men’s ladder after a strong win over Wildcats in a top-of-the-table clash in round fifteen.

Demons set up the win in the first ten minutes of the game with a dominant 17 to two quarter.

After their slow start, the Wildcats found their form with Joe Hurst and Darren Cogger starting to hit the scoreboard.

With some mini runs they dragged the large deficit to single figures during the last quarter.

But eight points was as close as they got with Ward Dickeson making some baskets and Ethan Zoch finishing off a great game with a big two-handed dunk to finish off a strong performance from the league leaders.

Zoch was the game high scorer with 19 points, while Glen Barlow scored 14 points.

The Wildcats were lead by Joe Hurst with 15 points and Darren Cogger with 12.

Meanwhile, Workers held onto third place on the table after a powerful 29-point win over the Alcheringa Saints.

Workers dominated early through guard Paul Andriotis and Travis Lindsay to build a 12-point lead, but youngster Jack Humphrey in his first A Grade game had success from behind the three-point arch to keep his team at 18 to 12 down at quarter time.

Workers were able to sustain their running game over the remaining three quarters and were able to run out winners 73 to 44.

Paul Andriotis finished on 21 points for Workers and David Kidd scored 15, while for the Saints Tyler Winton had his best game of the season with 18 points.

In the final game of the round the Halls Jayco Irymple Tigers looked like getting their first win of the season building a 26 to 10 quarter-time lead.

Hawks fought back in the second period with Sam Bell combining well inside with Anthony Labka to drag the deficit to a respectable three points at the half.

The second saw the lead change a dozen times but it was the Hawks’ size advantage that saw them win 70 to 63 after a brave display by the Irymple team.

Sam Bell was sensational for Hawks at both ends of the floor and finished with 26 points and Torben McFarlane chimed in with 10, while for the Tigers Kehan Dyce finished with 13 points and Bryce Dickeson had 10 points.
