Ashleigh Barty continues to prove why she is one of Australia’s most promising young tennis prospects, knocking out number one seed Chanel Simmonds in the first round of the Mildura Grand Tennis International yesterday.
The junior world number two and defending Wimbledon girls champion was never seriously challenged by the South African, running away with the match 6-2 6-3, to progress through to the second round in convincing fashion.
It’s the second year in a row Barty has beaten the number one seed in the first round after she knocked out Japanese player Kumiko Iijima last year.
Following her maiden professional win at the $25,000 pro circuit event in Sydney on Sunday, Barty said she was pleased with her first-round form.
“It was tough out here today for both of us, the first match on grass is always difficult changing surfaces,” Barty said
