Pupils will do a double take

Pupils will do a double take

03 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
STUDENTS at Merbein P-10 College will have double the fun with this year’s new teachers Gemma and Tammara Leatham.

The 22-year-old identical twins from Orbost have done everything together, from studying to living with each other and now they are both teaching at Merbein.

Although the pair will be on different campuses, they can’t wait until the merger to be reunited again.

“We love doing things together, we have the same mindset and it just makes it easier,” said Gemma, who will be teaching at the Merbein South campus.

“We just moved to Mildura last week from Bendigo where we attended La Trobe University.

“The only thing we did differently is have different majors, which doesn’t really matter if you’re teaching at a primary school.”

Tammara, will teach prep and Year 1 students at the Jenner Street campus.

“This is our first job out of university,” Tammara said.

“It has been a bit confusing for the other teachers for a start but when we are at different campuses it should be a lot easier for them.

“We are looking forward to the middle of the year when we merge into the senior campus, where we can be together and everything will be nice and new.

“I don’t think the children will realise there are two of us for a while,” she said.

The twins said they came across the jobs which they thought were meant to be for them.

“We saw the jobs advertised and thought it was perfect for us,” Gemma said.

“It was exactly what we wanted.

“We were attracted by the new merger, we thought it was a great opportunity as well as the great weather Sunraysia is known for.”

“Teaching is something we have always both wanted to do, so it is great that we are able to do it together,” Tammara said.

The duo admits they have got an advantage over the other teachers, having someone to swap notes with and help decorate each others classroom ahead of the new school year.

“It has been easier for us, we are able to exchange notes and help each other with ideas to organise our classes,” Tammara said.

“The thing we are looking forward to most is putting into practice everything we have learnt over the last four years.”
