IT seemed as though the entire town of Merbein had come to the funeral service of road transport industry pioneer Sydney “Gordon” Cupper at the Chapel of North West Funerals yesterday.
Hundreds gathered to farewell one of Merbein’s favourite citizens as Amazing Grace rang through the chapel and set the tone for the hour-long service that honoured Gordon Cupper’s life, supported his family and those close to him and then “took him home” to his final resting place at the Merbein Cemetery.
Celebrant Alan Cameron delivered the eulogy and said Gordon Cupper “lived to work and his passing will be noted by many people in many places, and for many reasons, the world and road transport in this great land, are the better for him having been here.”
Born in Mildura on November 5, 1928, Mr Cupper was the fourth born to his parents Victoria and John Cupper of Birdwoodton.
Their family of six included his sisters Joan, Bessie and Dawn and brothers Jack and Jim.
He attended primary school at The Lake School on Seventeenth Street and at the end of Year 8 entered the workforce.
