New life for old hospital

04 Jun, 2010 05:00 AM
A GROUP of Melbourne-based architecture students is hoping to answer the contentious question of what to do with the Old Mildura Base Hospital site.

Twelve students will next week unveil individual plans for the site on 13th Street as part of a Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) Masters Architecture Studio symposium, exhibition and student presentation.

Under the direction of architecture and design lecturers Johan van Schaik and Gretchen Wilkins, the students have been working on their plans since travelling to Mildura to view the site and survey the urban fringe areas in order to pick up some clues for their projects.

“A stalemate in progressing the OMBH plans for re-use was brought to our notice by Adjunct Professor, School of Architecture and Design RMIT, Stefano de Pieri,” Mr van Schaik said.

“It was a good fit for us as a semester one studio project and when presented to Mildura Rural City Council for consideration it was well received and a financial partnership between MRCC and RMIT eventuated.

“Once we had returned to Melbourne, brainstorming resulted in a long list of possibilities being drawn up after reflection in the group.
