THE Millewa Football League will start its 2012 season minus one club after Meringur Netball Football Club last night voted to go into recess for the next 12 months.
A disappointing turnout at the Kangaroos’ rescheduled annual general meeting at Chaffey Park last night left the club with no choice but to pull the plug on the 2012 season.
It was left to the club’s loyal band of supporters to make the call, with a majority of the about 20 members in attendance voting to go into recess.
The decision leaves the league without one its foundation member clubs and reduces the number of teams contesting this year’s competition to six.
Despite the club being in a sound financial position, the Roos have battled an exodus of players and off-field personnel in recent seasons.
That was reflected in a bottom of the ladder finish in 2011, highlighted by just two wins.
The club had yet to appoint a coach for the new season.
With the decision made to go into recess, the Roos have vowed to push ahead with plans to re-enter the competiton in 2013 and will continue to pay affiliation fees.
The AGM was rescheduled after an initial meeting drew a mere 10 people on January 16.
In a passionate plea to supporters last week, Meringur president Ron Hards told Sunraysia Daily the Kangaroos have operated continuously since about 1926, except for a few years during the Depression and World War II.
