AUSTRALIA’S own singer-songwriter and actress Jessica Mauboy is set to star at The Nowingi Place this month.
The artist will perform at the soundshell on Saturday, February 25 as part of Mildura Aboriginal Health Service’s (MAHS) Health and Wellbeing Community Day.
Mauboy is coming to help promote the day alongside many other local talents and services in the community.
MAHS is aiming to get their name in the record books with an attempt to have the most sexual health screenings in 12 hours.
The Aboriginal performer will be joined by the Victoria Police Band, Costantina Bush, Young Philly, Different Colours, Kennedy Brothers and many more.
Karinda Ritchie from MAHS said the event was open to all ages – indigenous or non-indigenous.
“We need to get 500 people to have a simple sexual health screening to set the record,” Ms Ritchie said.
“At first we were targeting youth, but we want the whole community to get on board and help raise awareness of the STIs which are increasing in Victoria.
“The aim of the day is to create awareness of health in general and promote our local services. We want to take away the stigma of sexual health screenings.
“Anyone from the age of 12 and up can come over and participate, they don’t necessarily have to be sexually active – just have their parents’ consent.
“Those who are under the age of 16 will need their parents’ consent and everyone should bring a Medicare card.
“We are creating awareness due to the huge increase in diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
“In the last 10 years the rates across Victoria have more than doubled or even tripled.
“Last year alone there were around 74,000 cases in Victoria.
“The screenings are very simple, we may even get Jessica to take part.”
Practice manager Lauris McCormack said she – along with the rest of the community – were very excited about the day.
“It is going to be a wonderful day, where the whole community can come together, indigenous, non-indigenous it doesn’t matter,” Ms McCormack said.
“It will increase the understanding of sexual health screenings around the community.”
The day will run from 10am until 10pm, with everyone encouraged to get down and support the cause.
There will be activities including rock climbing, rides, Aqua Orbs, a jumping castle and much more.
A free barbecue will be available and many prizes up for grabs.
The event is a drug, smoke and alcohol-free event.
