FEDERAL Member for Mallee John Forrest said yesterday a decision on who will form government was still “anyone’s guess”.
The nation is expected to remain in political limbo until at least early next week, with a trio of rural-based independents still undecided on which party to support to form a minority government.
The Coalition’s hopes of forming government rest solely with the three after Greens MP Adam Bandt and Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie this week both pledged support for Labor.
Their decision left incumbent Prime Minister Julia Gillard with 74 members compared with Mr Abbott’s 73 (including WA National Tony Crook).
With 76 members required to form government, Mr Forrest yesterday did not rule out a 75-75 split.
“It could go anyway,” Mr Forrest said from Swan Hill yesterday.
“We (The Nationals) have had two or three meetings with the independents – I don’t think you can automatically assume they will side with the Coalition.
“The way the numbers are falling, it could be 75-75. Either way there should be a decision early next week at the latest.”
The three rural independents, Bob Katter, Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott, have not indicated they would all support the same party.
Mr Forrest said he was hopeful, more than confident, the Coalition would get the necessary numbers.
“It’s the only way to get real outcomes, when you are in government,” he said.
