Australia Day attack unprovoked

28 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an Australia Day assault on a backpacker.

An Indian man, aged 23 years, and his girlfriend were left shaken after an unprovoked attack in Red Cliffs on Thursday at 10pm, police say.

The man received minor injuries and bruising to his head after being set upon by a group of youths – believed to be aged between 16 and 18 – near Barclay Square.

Police say one of the six-or-so youths involved in the attack was the stand out culprit.

Sgt Dale Simm of Mildura Police Station said the assault took place on the Calder Highway side of the square.

He believes the youths were also responsible for a damaged street light which will cost about $200 to repair.

“At this stage we’re looking for anyone who witnessed the assault to contact Mildura police,” Sgt Simm said.

Police are making inquiries and believe alcohol could have been a factor.

“It’s disappointing that someone was assaulted in the area, particularly on Australia Day,” Sgt Simm said.

“It’s always disappointing when someone gets assaulted.”

While the couple did not need medical attention, Sgt Simm said they were visibly upset and shaken.

Sgt Simm encouraged anyone with information to contact Greg Shaw at Mildura police on 5018 5300.
