Apex Park: sightseers flock to sandbar to see rising river levels

06 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
LOCALS and tourists are flocking to Apex Park to experience the sight of the rising river level and increased flow.

Park operators Margaret and Daryl Beasy said lots of visitors and locals were visiting the sandbar and taking pictures of the seven-year high river level downstream from Lock 11.

“The high river has created a real ‘wow’ factor,” Mrs Beasy said. “We noticed the water level coming up further towards the reeds along the Apex Park beach sandbar a couple of weeks ago.

“We’re hoping the rising level and the increased river flow will give the river red gums a good drink and flush away any accumulated debris.

“The river level is back to what it used to be years ago at this time of the year – I’ve been here at Apex RiverBeach for six years and haven’t seen the river this high before,” she said.

“The local canoe club members were happy to take advantage of the river height, paddling through the trees between the bank and the reeds along the river at their weekly paddling session.’’
